Welcome to Penny Path Blog

I'm Alexis Reyes, and it feels like a small miracle that you're here. As I sit down to write my very first blog post, a mix of emotions swirls inside me—excitement, nervousness, and gratitude. This blog is more than just a space for sharing personal finance tips; it’s a labor of love, born from my own struggles and triumphs.

My Financial Roots

Growing up in Portland, Oregon, financial stability was always an elusive dream. My parents worked tirelessly, but we often found ourselves living paycheck to paycheck. I vividly remember those cold nights when the electricity would get shut off because the bill hadn't been paid. My mom would scramble to find a way to get it turned back on. Those moments were scary, but they also taught me to appreciate the little things in life.

As I grew older, I was determined to break the cycle of financial struggles that had haunted my family for so long. College seemed like the golden ticket to a better future. Little did I know, those four years would set me back in ways I never could have imagined.

The Debt Trap

By the time I graduated, I was drowning in $47,000 of debt—$25,000 in student loans and $22,000 on credit cards. The numbers still feel staggering today. It’s hard to believe that things got so out of control.

But here's the thing: I wasn't reckless or irresponsible. I was just young and naive, lacking financial education. I thought I could handle it all—that I'd magically pay off my debt once I landed a good job after graduation. The reality check came swiftly.

Rock Bottom

I remember the day I hit rock bottom like it was yesterday. My checking account had just overdrafted for what felt like the hundredth time, and another collection call from a creditor rang through my phone. I felt like I was drowning in debt, with no way out. The shame and anxiety were suffocating.

I sat on my couch, staring blankly at the wall as tears streamed down my face. How had I let things get so bad? Why couldn't I just get my act together? In that moment, something inside of me shifted. I knew I needed to make a change—not just for myself, but for my future.

The Turning Point

That day marked the beginning of my journey towards financial freedom. It wasn't easy, and it certainly wasn't quick. But with time, patience, and persistence, I slowly began to chip away at my debt. I started by creating a budget that actually worked for me (not against me), cutting expenses wherever possible, and finding ways to increase my income.

I also decided to tackle my high-interest credit card debt first, using the debt avalanche method. It wasn't the most popular approach, but it made sense for me—I wanted to eliminate those pesky interest rates as quickly as possible. And you know what? It worked! I paid off that $22,000 in just under two years.

A New Chapter

Fast forward a few years, and my financial situation is almost unrecognizable. Not only am I debt-free (minus my mortgage), but I've also been able to save for the future and even invest in the stock market. The feeling of security that comes with having a solid financial foundation is indescribable.

Last year, I achieved one of my biggest goals: buying my first home here in Portland. It’s a cozy little bungalow in a neighborhood I love, and every time I walk through the front door, I’m reminded of just how far I’ve come. Small steps today, big wins tomorrow!
